Overseas OAP's Record Retirees - Posted: 11/07/2006
1 million Britons retired abroad over the last decade, official figures have been quoted.
It is also estimated that possibly one in three Britons are planning to purchase a property abroad.
They prefer to leave the UK for better weather, improved lifestyle and a lower cost of living.
The most popular European retirement destination was Spain, with almost 80,000 (locally registered) retirees moving there in the last 10 years. The most popular area being the Costa del Sol, which is around 85% British.
Similar patterns have been seen in other northern European countries. With retiring ex pats increasing demand for retirement homes as well as Spanish nationals who prefer to live by the coast and close to the many golf courses available on the Spanish coasts.
